Account Activation Text Scam

Fraudulent text messages are being sent to consumers in an effort to steal personally identifiable information. Mass text broadcasts are commonly used by fraudsters to reach large audiences of potential victims. This scam is quite common and often operates simultaneously in multiple states.

  •  Automated texts are being broadcast that warn consumers to call certain numbers to reactivate their payment cards.
  •  A recent text example: "Federal Credit Union ALERT: Your CheckCard has been temporarily LOCKED. Please call Card Services line …".
  •  Text messages do not reference a particular issuing brand but they may vaguely refer to a credit union or bank.
  •  Text messages may also originate from Jamaican area code 876 which is easily confused by consumers with a toll free number.

At HCCU, we take fraud seriously and will continue to diligently monitor this situation. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 916-364-1700 or 800-233-6328.

Upgrade to HCCU’s Fraud Detection and Notification System

As part of our continuing effort to bring the best technology and service to our members, we at HCCU are upgrading our Fraud Detection and Notification System. The new system will provide more immediate attention to notify our members faster when fraud is suspected. The notification portion of the system includes a state-of-the-art automated assistant to help our members review transactions and confirm their spending activity on Debit Cards.

If you receive a notification call from our automated assistant, whom we have nick-named Jill, please work with her to answer questions regarding recent card activity. Please also be aware that our Card Member Security team that provides fraud alert management is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week should you need assistance from a live agent.

If suspicious transactions are identified as fraudulent, calls will be transferred to our outstanding member support team at Card Member Security to help you take the necessary precautions to protect your cards and related accounts. If the recent activity is legitimate, members will be able to close the case with the phone attendant using their touch-tone phone.

Thank you for your support through this upgrade and, as always, thank you for being a member of Heritage Community Credit Union.

A major security flaw has been found in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer that can allow hackers to hijack online sessions. This is a browser-based vulnerability and does not affect the operating system. The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) advises to stop using Internet Explorer if users are unable to apply workarounds published by Microsoft.
